What is Sade Sati?

The term Sade Sati literally means “seven and a half.” It represents the seven-and-a-half-year period when Saturn (Shani) crosses the rashi before, the rashi containing and the rashi after  the rashi with the natal Moon (Janma Rashi). Since each rashe takes appx. 2.5 years, this total period comes to 7.5 years. Thus getting the name Sāde Sāti.

It starts with the entry of Saturn to the 12th house of the Moon and finishes once it exits the 2nd house, thus completing a seven and a half year journey. Shani Dev, who is the Lord of Justice (Nyayadhipati), is the one who guarantees fairness and the balancing of the outcome of the karma of each soul.

The ancient Jyotish Shastras describe this as a time of deep karmic significance. As written in the Brihat Samhita (Ch. 8.25):
“वृष्टिः समाद्ये प्रमुखे द्वितीये प्रभूततोया कथिता तृतीये ।

पश्चाज्जलं मुञ्चति यच्चतुर्थं स्वल्पोदकं पञ्चममब्दमुक्तम् ॥ २५ ॥”

Scriptural Meaning of Shani Sade Sati

Saturn is seen as harsh or cruel planet. Infact, Astrologers call Shani a Paap graha. This is not because Shani does Paap, but because in Astrology, it is the duty of Shani to punish you for your karma as per its placement in the chart. Not even gods are spared the justice of Shani when he looks at them. 

Though Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (the fundamental jyotisha text) does not explicitly mention Sāde Sāti as a term, the first principles that create the situation are properly expounded by Parashara to Maitreya. These principles have led many Jyotishis to give this period a name.

The Padma Purana states that Saturn is black, dull and impartial, a celestial deity that bestows good fortune to those who practice dharma and takes away good fortune from those practising adharma. The lesson is that Saturn does not do things without a reason; it comes to restore equilibrium in a situation where none existed.
